On Friday, Dean for Institutional Diversity Kristin Dukes hosted a virtual panel discussion in honor of Juneteenth. Alumni and faculty discussed actualizing freedom for Black people in 2020 and beyond.
?
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. It honors June 19, 1865, the date when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas — some of the last Black slaves in the U.S. — learned of their freedom. Although 2020 marks the 155th anniversary of this celebration and the “formal” end of chattel slavery in the U.S., many would argue that Black people in the U.S. continue to fight for freedom.
