We know that when a customer shops local $68 of every $100 stays in the community. For brick and mortar national firms this number is much lower, and for online purchases it's often near $0. So, why local?
I think most of our members know the power of a local business. I often use the line that business owners and managers are all insane, we are willing to work 60 and 80 hours a week so we don't have to work 40. I wonder if the community knows what we are doing with all those extra hours?
I know. Sure it's all the 'business' stuff, and it's donating time running a food drive and delivering the food. It's staying late to finish up an employee's work so they can head home early to take care of a sick child. It's filling in hours because you don't have the heart to let go of an employee who is battling cancer. It's cleaning the bathroom because you think its beneath your receptionist to do after a customer made a mess. It's also making sure you have formula in stock, because when you run out 2 day shipping isn't fast enough.
Local Business provides options for the community, and donates to community cause more than 2 times the normal rate. We have made the decision to invest in the community and hire from the community. Local Business plays an important part of what the community is. In many ways when a customer shops local, they are investing in the future of our own community.
This buying season, let's all remember and remind our sphere of influence to #shoplocal.
On behalf of the Officers and Directors of Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce I wish all of you a happy, healthy, and prosperous holiday season.Joseph Garcia
